Morocco warns of threats to stability in Sahelo-Saharan region

(United Nations) - Morocco's Ambassador to the UN Mohamed Loulichki warned of the threats to stability looming over the African continent, notably in the Sahelo-Saharan region Africa made significant strides towards stability, however, regions in the continent such as the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes continue to be targeted by destabilisation attempts, Loulichki said in a UN Security Council meeting on the prevention of conflict in Africa.

The absence of cross-border cooperation and security coordination in the Sahelo-Saharan provides a favourable environment for arms trafickers and terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Loulichki explained.

The scale of conflicts in Africa requires a re-examination of the concept of golbal security, he said, adding that conflict prevention in the continent can be achieved through an efficient coordination and management of security efforts and plans at the national and regional levels.

To develop the "culture of Peace ", the Moroccan official said, African countries should foster good neighbourhood on the basis of mutual respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He underlined that promoting solidarity and bilateral cooperation in the field of security at the regional level is a key element in conflict prevention.

In this respect, Loulichki also stressed the need to address the causes of economic underdevelopment and urged the introduction of reforms promoting governance and the rule of law.
